One Meta Tag You Should Use Carefully

There is only one meta tag that most search engines use – the description tag. It is not ordinarily used for SEO ranking purposes, but it is normally used (including by Google) as the text on the search results listing.

Google more often than not uses the description meta tag as the text to show when it shows your website in the search results. We find that it will use this about 70-80% of the time. The rest of the time it will pick up random text from your home page but usually it picks up the first 156 characters of text on the page if it does not use the description tag. Make sure your description tags are always 156 characters or less.

Microsoft Word has a great tool that will allow you to check the text length very quickly. This tool is visible on the status bar at the bottom of the page. To use it choose the text you want to determine the length and then double click on the word count statistics box.

The meta tags should appear in the head section of the page between the head tags.

Google is a little scallywag when it comes to using or not using the meta description tag. When it does use it you can have full control of what is displayed to likely visitors but it will often change what it uses at will with sometimes it just plucking a piece of text from your page.

To ensure you have more control over what Google selects as the text in the search results as well as setting the description tag carefully also make sure that the first 156 characters of text on your page says what you would like to appear in Google.

If you have a flash site or just use pictures with a little text, you have a problem! We have seen Google pick up the alt text from an image and display this when it did not choose to use our description tag. This will tell you to ALWAYS have some text on your page even if it is only 156 carefully chosen characters (including spaces).

Not to long ago I was working with a client on applying some SEO techniques. I started with a focus on on-page optimization and then migrated towards off page optimization in an effort to generated inbound links to their website.

Google and other search engines appear to be catching on and know what you’ve used an automated service to do your link building. You can still submit to directories to build quality one-way links to your web site. However, I recommend that you do so manually.

Keep in mind that social media isn’t just about what you can get from others, it’s also about what you can give back. A relationship with your followers has to be created. You do that by talking about non-business related things, sharing tid-bits of your life, re-tweeting, leaving comments, and generally showing an interest in others.

Social media is first and foremost, about community, relationships, and giving. After you’ve proven yourself worthy of people’s time, the traffic and sales will come.

Remember, just because social media has taken the Internet by storm doesn’t mean you should stop using traditional methods of marketing your business. There are many limitations to social networking, such as a 140 character limit on Twitter, that don’t allow you to get across what you need to sometimes. So be sure to add social media to your business, not use it to replace the things that are already working.
